Led Televisions

The easiest description of an LED display could be thought of as “a video display which uses light-emitting diodes to show or display a picture”. Which sounds obvious. In fact it may be, but in reality it expresses what an LED display is very well. And that’s really important, especially when you take into account how marketing is used when describe electronics like LED TVs. LED displays are often used outdoors; being set up as billboards or used in sports grounds to display scores and such. Although these days, we are finding LED displays making their way indoors and for other uses than billboards. LED lights for example provide excellent energy efficiency.

There are two basic types of LED displays. these are usually called either surface-mounted devices or conventional LED panels. Let’s talk briefly about the conventional LED display panels first since they are most likely what you are used to seeing on billboards. These are the types of displays which if you move up close to them will lose all definition and look all pixelated. Basically these are a bunch of individually mounted LEDs. These consist of pixels which are square collections of blue, green and red. SMD or surface-mounted device panels comprise of blue, green and red diodes being mounted onto a chip which is then mounted onto a PC board mounted onto a PC board are called surface mounted device panels or SMD for short. They are smaller than a pinhead while conventional displays are not!. So surface mounted LED displays help us manufacture panels which are better for closer viewing than conventional panels. LED display panels are ideally suited for use in televisions. Surface Mounted Display panels are good for home electronics and the fact that they are so small makes them excellent for televisions and home electronics.

Televisions with LED display panels tend to be lighter and thinner than ever. Interestingly, even though LED TVs are only now becomming a reality for an average household, an LED flat panel TV was actually made in 1977 as a quarter inch thin prototype. Now back in those days, blue LEDs were very inefficient and so the prototype LED panel TV was purposefully made to be monochrome. In the same piece of research that led to the creation of the prototype panel, LCD or Liquid Crystal Displays were touted as being an excellent alternative to LEDs for creating flat pannel TVs. 30 years later, we finally managed to catch up with this guy and started producing LED TVs for the home.

LED based display panels allow us to create very light and thin televisions – an obvious advantage over the now antequated CRT based displays. The quality of the picture is also so much better allowing you to take advantage of true HD, However, you must be cautious when checking out new televisions, especially those that claim to be LED TVs. Too many televisions that claim to be LED TVs are in fact LCD televisions with some additional backlighting provided by LEDs. Obviously this is not a true LED display panel because it is still using an LCD for the actual picture display. Don’t pay a premium for these types of display panels which are merely marketed as LED TVs.

LCD Televisions question by M. Sami: What are the advantages of LCD televisions over Plasmas? And what are the adv. of plasma over LCDs?
I’ve heard that it depends on the size of the room. The room is 450X600 cm and the TV is 37 or 40 inches. Can you add a source if possible?
