A report released by search engine Google has revealed that using Gmail for business email instead of a locally hosted email server can be up to 80 times more energy efficient.

Using Gmail can reduce server energy, including the energy required to house and cool the servers. The data servers used by Google are some of the most energy efficient in the world, and it is small and medium sized businesses which will see the biggest CO2 reduction if they choose to use Gmail.

Google says over 4 million businesses already use Gmail for their business email, which is a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Many businesses have been installing energy efficiency equipment in their premises to try and reduce their carbon emissions, but the research from Google shows that there are many other ways for businesses to become more energy efficient.

Apollo Enviro offer environmental consultancy services to help businesses reduce their emissions. From undertaking an environmental audit to highlight areas where energy savings could be made, to arranging environmental awareness workshops to show that making small changes can have a big impact.

Apollo Enviro can also help larger businesses with all aspects of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. This is a mandatory scheme for companies who use large amounts of energy and requires businesses to register and report on their energy use. Apollo Enviro can manage all this on behalf of businesses as well as offering suggestions on ways to reduce carbon emissions to minimise how much businesses have to spend under the scheme.
