The term computer software is so broad that it is really hard to cover in just one article, but we will do our best for you. With all the different types of software out on the market, the one thing to remember more than anything else has got to be a few steps on how to identify the software and properly put it into perspective. We will break it down into gaming software, gaming peripheral software, applications in productivity, online software and store purchased software.

Gaming software is everywhere. Basically, there are a couple of different options where gaming computer software is concerned. Okay, who am I fooling? You can throw imaginary jewels at penguins or storm the beaches at Normandy in games these days. There are even games where you can create your own creatures or universe! When purchasing this type of software make sure your system beats the minimum requirements. If you don’t then you are not going to have the same gaming experience that is shown on the box. This is just a harsh reality. Often not making the specs means a slower game or less detailed graphics.

Computer software dealing with things outside of a game is often called peripheral software or mods. There is a difference though. A mod is a modification of a game. These are usually add-ons made by game enthusiasts. They can be used to add an element of customization to a game. Mods can be tricky though so be careful. Other types of gaming applications can be ran outside of a game to enable player to player voice or game guides could also be called peripheral computer software.

Applications and productivity software are used to make things. Yeah, I know, it’s insane. Anything from creating documents, to running statistics, emails software and even music recording software are all productivity software. If you can get something out of it, and it doesn’t involve a score or killing Orcs, it’s probably an application.

Online purchase of computer software is generally a good choice many people opt for. The upsides are the instant gratification that comes with having to not go to the store to purchase anything. Often you can buy the installation disk online, download the computer software and in a few days have a hardcopy back up. NICE! The thing to remember is that if it’s super cheap or free, it’s probably not as free as you think.

People who often download software online have to run a spyware checker fairly often. Spyware is more or less a little guy on your hard drive that will report your activity to companies so they can market the heck out of you, or else make your browser do funny things like got to artichokecentral.com or something. For the most part, if you stay with the bigger, better known companies, then you should be fine. The smaller outfits should definitely be scanned with a spyware detector before installation.

Offline or store bought software is a good thing if you have the time. Often you will spend a little more, but you will have your back up right away. Make sure your system operates at the minimum requirements, and like gaming or any other type of computer software, above it if possible. Probably one of the downsides to this type of software is that usually finding a large selection of a specific type of software is a bit harder.

Computer software is just one of those subjects that is so general it is hard to get a handle on. Hopefully this helps some for the newbie. Remember though that if your computer is running slower to close down background programs. Often when you install a new piece of software, this will help free up valuable resources.
