A Comparison Of Plasma and LCD Televisions

Article by Jamie Simpson

For years, there have been advocates for LCD televisions and advocates for plasma televisions. They clash on a regular basis. Each side believes their type of technology is superior to the other and that the opposition is so inferior that they would not go anywhere near it.

The truth is that LCD and plasma televisions both have their own advantages and disadvantages. The way their technologies work, each type trades off one feature for another. In the end, it will always come down to personal choice. However, there are definable and factual differences between the different types of televisions that can help in making that choice.

First, it should be understood how the two types of technology actually work. Plasma televisions employ incredibly small plasma lights, essentially equivalent to a fluorescent light, pressed between two pieces of glass. Through a complex and very controlled distribution of electricity, the display turns on red, green and blue lights in order to form a picture.

LCD displays, or liquid crystal displays, use liquid crystals pressed between two polarized transparent plates. Light is passed through the panels and crystals and electricity applied to control which crystals will let what amount of light through in order to form an image.

One advantage of a plasma television is that because of how their technology works, it is possible to have very deep and rich blacks and other dark colors. This leads to a better contrast ratio. They also have a slightly higher tacking rate, meaning they can change their pixels faster than an LCD television. Finally, a plasma television usually has a wider viewing arc.

An LCD television has the advantage of higher resolutions because of the technology. An LCD display also will not suffer from screen burn. They tend to use less power than a plasma television, sometimes half as much. LCD televisions are also lighter and may have a longer lifespan than plasma. LCD televisions have drawbacks as well. Because of how the screen is lit, it is difficult to render true, dark blacks. This leads to slightly less contrast. Tracking is also a little slower than plasma. The other disadvantage is that there is always the possibility that a single pixel could burn out on the screen, leaving a black or white ever present dot. This cannot be repaired. Instead, the entire screen must be replaced.

Plasma televisions have the disadvantage of using more power than an LCD television. They also run the risk of image burn, where the screen image is shown for too long and ‘burns’ into the screen. A plasma television also gets very, very hot when running. They are also much heavier than LCD televisions because of the glass panels and can suffer from glare in bright rooms.

The price difference between the two types will depend on the size of television. Smaller televisions under 42″ are far cheaper when using LCD technology. However, plasma is much cheaper for screens that are larger than that.

In the end the decision will have to be made based on the environment the television will be in, personal preferences and budget needs. Both types of televisions provide an excellent image and will operate for many, many years.

On Monday it said it would stop production at two of its Japanese TV panel factories—one making plasma display panels and the other LCD panels—this fiscal year. As a result, the company will have only one plasma panel plant and one LCD plant in Japan

LCD Televisions question by lookat: Since most flat screen LCD televisions cost so much why don’t they come with e cloth ?

My Toshiba 40 inch LCD HDTV did not come with any kind of cloth. I think it’s called a microfiber cloth, one that is highly absorbent, soft as a baby blanket and guaranteed not to scratch the surface of my LCD flat screen High Definition Television. Someone mentioned you should never use windex or glass plus but only use distilled water, not tap water. With all this detail about what not to do I just need the basics of what to do.

You mean “with a cloth”? My Samsung LN32B460 LCD TV did come with a cleaning cloth.

Yea, I have to use the nosquint firefox plugin which memorizes different zoom levels for different websites. For example, I’m at 160% zoom here.

It was "only" $2350. That’s still more than double what I paid for my 36-inch CRT in 1999… But the resolution is more than double as well, so per pixel it’s probably worth it. And CRTs aren’t the clearest thing; using it would hurt my eyes.

Of course, 8 months on this screen and my eyes are having real problems that they didn’t with a CRT, despite the fact that this is crystal clear, and the CRT was quite blurry. Maybe it’s age (34)… But I’m used to 20/20 vision and not having problems focusing!

This review is from: Coby KTFDVD1560 15.6-Inch Under-the-Cabinet DVD/CD Player Swivel Screen with Digital TV and AM/FM Radio (Electronics)

I was so excited to finally get a TV/CD-Player/Radio in the kitchen so we could have something playing while we cooked, cleaned, etc. However, this unit has a few quirks I do not like:

    1. The magnets are insufficient to hold the screen in the upright position. As a result, it sags and I will have to add Velcro or something to keep it in place.

    2. The screen pivots on a half-inch swivel made of plastic; I just know it’s going to have a stress fracture one of these days.

    3. The volume levels are disproportionate; setting 2 is too soft while setting 3 is too loud.

    4. There is no ‘mode’ indicator on the main display, so if the screen is in the up position, you can’t see which one the unit is in: CD/DVD, radio, TV, aux.

    5. The clock is quite annoying; it’s blinding in a dark room, and it also displays the seconds (always running, quite distracting).

    Some of the pros include:

    1. The price; the unit was relatively inexpensive.

    2. The screen quality appears to be good, though if viewed from any angle other than straight on, it fades.

    3. The mounting was relatively easy; though anything other than completely straight up-and-down drilling results in torque to the bolts.

    4. The radio searches and finds local stations, so all you have to do to find your favorite is press the channel up or down.

    5. The remote has a magnet, so you can store it on most anything metal; the fridge, the dishwasher, etc.

Overall, I think I should have gone with a higher-end model… but it’s here, so I will enjoy it.

This product has been fantastic. The picture and sound is as good or better than more expensive models I’ve seen. This is the largest screen I’ve seen for an under counter TV (15.6″). The TV is worth the price but having a DVD/CD player, AM/FM radio and the fact that the grandchildren can play video games on it, makes it worth much more. I strongly suggest this item if you spend as much time in the kitchen as we do.
